Ground-layer Wave Front Reconstruction from Multiple Natural Guide Stars
نویسندگان
چکیده
Observational tests of open-loop ground-layer wave front recovery have been made using a constellation of four natural guide stars at the 1.55 m Kuiper telescope in Arizona. Such tests explore the effectiveness of wide-field seeing improvement by correction of low-lying atmospheric turbulence with ground-layer adaptive optics (GLAO). The wave fronts from the four stars were measured simultaneously on a Shack-Hartmann wave front sensor (WFS). The WFS placed a 5 ; 5 array of square subapertures across the pupil of the telescope, allowing for wave front reconstruction up to the fifth radial Zernike order. We find that the wave front aberration in each star can be roughly halved by subtracting the average of the wave fronts from the other three stars.Wave front correction on this basis leads to a reduction inwidth of the seeing-limited stellar image by up to a factor of 3, with image sharpening effective from the visible to near-infrared wavelengths over a field of at least 20.We conclude that GLAO correctionwill be a valuable tool that can increase resolution and spectrographic throughput across a broad range of seeing-limited observations. First-order performance evaluation of adaptive-optics systems for atmospheric-turbulence compensation in extended-field-of-view astronomical telescopes
An approach is presented for evaluating the performance achieved by a closed-loop adaptive-optics system that is employed with an astronomical telescope. This method applies to systems incorporating one or several guide stars, a wave-front reconstruction algorithm that is equivalent to a matrix multiply, and one or several deformable mirrors that are optically conjugate to different ranges. Sys...
متن کاملAdaptive optics with four laser guide stars: correction of the cone effect in large telescopes.
We study the performance of an adaptive optics (AO) system with four laser guide stars (LGSs) and a natural guide star (NGS). The residual cone effect with four LGSs is obtained by a numerical simulation. This method allows the adaptive optics system to be extended toward the visible part of the spectrum without tomographic reconstruction of three-dimensional atmospheric perturbations, resolvin...
متن کاملDesign of the Adaptive Optics Systems for GMT
The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) includes adaptive optics (AO) as an integral component of its design. Planned scientific applications of AO span an enormous parameter space: wavelengths from 1 to 25 μm, fields of view from 1 arcsec to 8 arcmin, and contrast ratio as high as 10. The integrated systems are designed about common core elements. The telescope’s Gregorian adaptive secondary mirror...
متن کاملTests at the MMT of Multi-Laser Guide Star Wavefront Sensing for Advanced Adaptive Optics
Key advances in adaptive optics (AO) for both astronomical and military applications will be enabled through the deployment of multiple laser guide stars on a single telescope. Wider compensated fields of view than are now seen with conventional AO systems, even those equipped with single laser beacons, will be achieved, with less field dependence of the delivered point-spread function. Correct...
متن کاملLimiting precision of tomographic phase estimation
In the context of multiconjugate adaptive optics, the optimum linear estimation of a wave-front phase for a target object using the phases of several surrounding natural guide stars (NGS’s) is studied. A Wiener-filtertype estimator is constructed. The minimum residual wave-front-phase (tomographic) error depends on the turbulence vertical profile, and for typical profiles it is almost insensiti...
